HONOLULU — A 43-year-old woman has been sentenced to a year in jail for stealing more than $50,000 from the parent-teacher-student association at a charter school, Lanikai Elementary School.
HONOLULU — A 43-year-old woman has been sentenced to a year in jail for stealing more than $50,000 from the parent-teacher-student association at a charter school, Lanikai Elementary School.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports acting Circuit Judge Shirley Miki Kawamura on Wednesday also ordered Tonya Taylor to repay $50,574.41 to the Lanikai School ‘Ohana and write a letter of apology.
She will be on probation for five years.
Deputy Attorney General Chris Young says Taylor was president of the parent organization and stole the money from 2007 to 2011. He says Taylor wrote checks to her husband and herself and used the group’s debit card to make purchases and withdraw cash.
Taylor says she didn’t act out of greed. She says her abusive husband demanded that she maintain the family’s affluent appearance.
